Chiron
You may have heard a lot about Chiron lately, but what is it and what does it mean? Chiron, the Centaur, was discovered on November 1, 1977. Astronomers continue to change Chiron's orbital status, from planet, to planetoid, to comet, and astrologers are not sure what signs Chiron rules. No one is really sure where Chiron belongs yet. But through careful observation and statistical analysis, astrologers are learning how it works in a chart.

To determine what Chiron symbolizes in a chart, we look at what was happening in the world when the planet (or object) was discovered. In November 1977 when Chiron was discovered, we were on the brink of the new computer age. We were also on the brink of a free market economy, more conservative governments, greater environmental awareness, and increased terrorism. This is also the time that we began to hear about the New Age. New Age healing techniques and the use of herbs in heaing made ancient remedies popular again. After 1977, we collectively realized our family dysfunctions and began the healing process.

In personal charts, research has proven that Chiron is important for marriage, pregnancy, and children. The presence of Chiron in your natal chart shows where you are accountable. We don't just fall in love, we get married. We don't just mess around, we have children. We don't just start a busines, we form a corporation. Things are serious where Chiron resides in your chart.

Mythological Chiron was a healer and mentor. He taught many of the Greek heroes and warriors the arts of defense, healing, astrology, among many other subjects, providing his promising students with a truly well-rounded education. During a Centaur uprising, Chiron was accidentally shot by one of Hercule's poison arrows, but because Chiron was immortal, he could not die. He was a healer, and although he tried to heal his wounds, they would not heal. Sick of being sick, Chiron volunteered to take Prometheus' place (he was being eteranlly tortured for giving fire to mankind). Taking pity on his situation, Zeus released Chiron from Prometheus' burden and placed him in the sky in the constellation Sagittarius. This gives Chiron affiliation with the sign Sagittarius. And because he was a healer and teacher, Virgo is also associated with Chiron. Since true rulership for Chiron has not been determined, many astrologers do not use Chiron in their profiles and predictions, although more and more astrologers are noting and observing the position and transits of Chiron in an attempt to understand the role of this Centaur in our charts.
